Hattie Big Sky - review

Hattie Big Sky (Hattie, #1)Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What was life like for teenagers a hundred years ago? Those working on farms in Montana had little time for socializing, sports and studying like teens today. The heroine in this book, Hattie, is a teenager who's working and living by herself to "earn" the farm she inherited from an unknown uncle. She's confronted with all kinds of challenges—from building an impossibly long fence to standing up to cruel neighbors to poverty and loneliness—and faces them all with courage and determination. The story is sprinkled with letters she writes to a friend who's fighting WWI in Europe. Those letters made me realize that even though our lives are more comfortable today, some of the horrors of war and racism still remain.
