The Writing Life: Kobo’s E-Publishing Option

Rating: none

The e-book platform wars slog on. What platform should you choose? iBook? EPUB? PDF? HTML? Stick with one or use many? E-book publishers, many of whom are primarily writers themselves, have a daunting range of publishing formats to address with their e-books. An now there’s another. The Writing Life by Kobo.

Kobo’s new option is targeted directly at writers who care more about words than bytes. From their web site, the Kobo team beckons, “Bring us your Word documents, your Mobi files, your Text files! We'll run your manuscript through our advanced open-source conversion process, transforming it into an ePub in a snap so it's ready for instant publication to hoards of Kobo readers.”

More than ease-of-production, Kobo is marketing its service as non-binding. This is a direct dig at Amazon and Apple who have proprietary clauses in their contracts. Sure, a writer has an option to publish his or her copywriter materials on any platform, but on Amazon and Apple you don’t have complete control over the pricing. Specifically, you don’t have flexibility on when you can distribute your books free.

The Writing Life by Kobo has been announced but it has not launched yet. Stay tuned.
